A difficult day.

It s-worded most of the day which really slowed us down. One or two inches. Traffic crawled along at 35-40MPH for miles and miles. This is why in the stats below we drove for 13 hours and averaged just 41MPH. But I guess I shouldn't complain.

Today we visited the capitals of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Tonight The Navigator and I are once again enjoying the relative luxury of a room at Motel 6. This one is in Merrillville, IN, near Chicago. Tomorrow we'll go up into Michigan and then head for Indianapolis.

Some comments on the first picture below. Several folks have emailed asking how we manage in the back of the van for sleeping, etc. This pic shows the back of the van. I'm so embarrassed... sorry the bed is not made :) Working left to right:

  • Since we're going to the dog show in Louisville and I'm gonna be working for four days, bungee corded to the side of the van is a comfortable chair for me and The Navigator's fold-up crate. The rolled up rug you see goes in the bottom of the crate along with water, food and, most importantly, dog treats. The little silver thing you see tucked under the red nylon tie-down is a fold up alarm clock. I keep it there for convenience while we're traveling.
  • Next is The Navigator's bed, brown in color. It is surrounded by a sleeping bag to keep him warm at night.
  • Continuing to the left is my bed. You can see the sleeping bag and the pillows. And you can barely see the mattress, which is dark brown. As comfortable as the bed at home.
  • The gray plastic tub contains the emergency rations and two gallons of water. Thank goodness we've not had to use this.
  • Beneath the tub you can see the wood shelf that runs from behind the driver's seat to the back of the van.
  • Finally, you can see just a little of my clothes closet. The tuxedo with tails and the cashmere overcoat are just to the right out of the pic.
This setup has been developed over several trips and is still being modified.

See the narrative above. The Navigator demonstrates some serious piling up of the s-word. The capitol of Minnesota in St. Paul, the state capital. Downtown St. Paul. The tall brown building is the Wells-Fargo building.
Some readers have emailed and accused me of making too much of the cold temperatures. So I offer this as proof. This pix was taken about 3pm so that number is most likely the high for the day. Now you see why we're staying in a Motel 6 :) Hey June, how 'bout this? Minnesota says bye-bye. And Wisconsin says hello. You really can't tell because of all the snow, but that broad white area in the middle of the pic is the St. Croix River that separates Minnesota from Wisconsin.
The capitol of Wisconsin. In the state capital, Madison. When I first saw this building, I thought, "Oh, what a quaint looking church. I gotta take a pic of that." Oops, my mistake. It's a quaint restaurant :) Another shot of the capitol with the dome all lit up.
The poor van! It's been through a lot today. That's The Mighty Navigator staring at you from the passenger seat, or as he prefers, His Throne. And the little yellow gadget on the dashboard is the world famous "GPS Unit." The Navigator and I learned something new today... the GPS Unit does not work when it's s-wording. I guess the s-word blocks the signals from the satellites. But we can still use the maps. We just loose the convenience of knowing where we are :)

Some more strange, maybe even true, facts from Leo in NJ:

  • Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history:
    Spades - King David
    Hearts - Charlemagne
    Clubs -Alexander, the Great
    Diamonds - Julius Caesar
  • 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321
