Always on the bleeding edge and constantly testing the limits of sanity, The Navigator and I broke new ground last night. The overnight low was 17 degrees and we did just fine.

Another pretty day for traveling. Sunny, beautiful blue sky. But cold.

We visited two capitols today. It just worked out that way.

Tonight we're camped at a Flying J in Northwest Davenport, IA. Iowa is a NEW state!!

The Internet access here is very fast but I can't check my email in the usual way. I guess Earthlink is having POP3 server problems. I wanted to send everybody on the trip email list an email that we're doing okay and that the web site has been updated. Oh, well. I'll try again in the morning.

Special note for June. We entered Iowa today but there's no sign. We were crossing a river on a very narrow bridge and that's where the sign was. I couldn't stop due to traffic and didn't want to risk another windshield shot :) A shame, too, since Iowa is a new state. I'll try again when we cross from Iowa into Minnesota. I know that's cheating, but...

You may think I took this pic because of the Motel 6. While it is true Motel 6 is my fav, mostly because they are Navigator friendly :), this pix was taken because it contains a hidden state capitol. Can you find it? The state capitol of Missouri in Jefferson City. Imposing looking building. This church is right across the street from the capitol. I took this pic because the spire is kinda different. The federal highway system and most state highway systems use numbers, like the 54 in this pic, to label roads. Missouri, I guess because it's the "Show Me" state, uses letters instead of numbers. Like E and M in this pic. Today we traveled on Hwy-A and Hwy-C. After they used all the letters they used double letters like AA and RR. Take a look at a Missouri map sometime. Kinda strange.
Here's a sign for June. The county seat building in Pittsfield, IL. Interesting building. You can't see it in the pic, but engraved in the stone above the windows above the front door it says, "Erected 1894." The spire is interesting. Reminds me of something Middle European. Check that price. Ouch!! This pic was taken right outside Springfield, IL. Ah, another hidden capitol. Hint: the woman is almost pointing at it.
The capitol of Illinois in Springfield.

From AppyPappy in VA:

If you aren't part of the solution, there is good money to be made prolonging the problem.

From Dorothy in SC, a sweet story about dear old Grandpa...

Grandpa was always going on about the good old days, and the lower cost of living, in particular.

"When I was a kid, my mom could send me to the store, and I'd get a salami, two pints of milk, 6 oranges, 2 loaves of bread, a magazine, some new blue jeans, all for a dollar!"

Then Grandpa said sadly, "You can't do that anymore. They got those darn video cameras everywhere."
