East Peoria, Illinois
Marching To The Trial
Day 7 - Thursday, March 9, 2006

Today was not a good day.
I woke up about 7:30am to pouring rain. Raining so bad I had to practically push The Navigator out the van door so he could do his business.
We hit the road and drove out of East Peoria. And ran into trouble almost immediately.
It was raining so hard that, even with the wipers on high speed, it was dangerous to drive over 40. And being behind an 18 wheeler with all the spray they throw off was just impossible.
NE Illinois is very, very flat. And the backroads we travel are not raised. So the roads began to flood once the gullies on either side of the road filled up. By 10:30am this was becoming a serious problem. I turned off the cruise control because hydroplaning is not fun. Following an 18 wheeler who is suddenly 45 degrees to the road is not fun. But he recovered. I bet his life was flashing by during that :)
Long story short... we were NOT having fun. So I grabbed an interstate as quickly was I could and headed for Louisville. We got here about 7:15pm. A day early but most likely a lot safer.
I'm not happy about having to give up part of the trip. This is the second time this has happened. First time was during the Blue Ridge/Skyline trip in September, 2004.
Now that we're in Louisville, the trip is "officially" over. Posting a new page for each day from now on was not in the original plan. But, if interesting things happen I'll probably post. Just check back from time to time.

|Sorry about the poor quality of this pix. It was shot through the side window of the van. And it was raining sideways against that window :) The Navigator got all excited about delivering another "bonus state" to you until I explained that we were still in Illinois. And he's the navigator. LOL!|
